ANDREW - COCKING - BAGLEY - VALLANCE
Joseph ANDREW married Mary SIMSON 30th April 1733 at Willoughton, Lincolnshire.
Their children Bapt. at Willoughton were – Joseph 1733, Robert 1735, John 1737 George 1739 and John 1742.
They then had a daughter Hanna Bapt. 1748 at Waddingham.
Son Joseph and wife Ann had 2 children at Willoughton and a third at Harpswell, Lincolnshire.
Robert ANDREWJane ANDREW, the daughter of Robert and Ann, was Bapt. 20th October 1771 at Harpswell.
In 1803 Jane had illegitimate twins born on 7th September at Spridlington, Lincolnshire.
The twins were Bapt. Robert and Ann ANDREW on 13th September. The father not known.
Jane married John COCKING on 14th July 1804 at Spridlington.
Jane and John COCKING had 2 children at Spridlington – William 1806 and John 1809.
They then moved to Askham in Nottinghamshire and had 2 more children – George 1812 and Robert 1816.
George died in 1812 and son Robert (1816) died in 1820, at Askham.
It is unlikely that John COCKING is the father of Jane’s illegitimate children because John and
Jane later had a son Robert COCKING together at Askham in 1816.
In the Census of 1861 Jane COCKING is living at the Methodist Chapel in Clayworth, Notts.,
with their son William COCKING a farmer, and his second wife Jane.
John COCKING appears to have died in 1837 at Askham.
Jane died in 1862, aged 93, at Woodcotes in Askham parish and was blind..
Robert ANDREW, the illegitimate son of Jane ANDREW was born on 7th September and Bapt. 13th
September 1803 at Spridlington, Lincs. The father is not known.
In 1827 Robert ANDREW, of Moorhouses in the parish of Laxton, Notts., appeared before the magistrates
at New Sleaford, Lincs. charged with being the father of a female child of Elizabeth BAGALEY,
[b.1809 at Laxton, see below] single woman; the child born at the house of William WALTON in the parish
of Stapleford, Lincs. The child was Bapt. Harriet BAGALER on 27th May 1827 at Stapleford.
Robert ANDREW’s surety for the court appearance was John Cocking of Askham, Notts., Robert’s step father.
Robert Andrew was charged £5 - 13 - 6 for his arrest and the Parish Overseer’s costs of the birth.
He then had to pay 2/- per week maintenance.
Robert ANDREW remained a single agricultural labourer at Laxton until he died there in 1883. Elizabeth,
the daughter of James BAGGELEY and Sarah was Bapt. 12th August 1788 at Laxton. In 1788 Elizabeth had an
illegitimate child by an, as yet unknown, father. The child was Bapt. Elizabeth on 20th January 1809 at Laxton.
Mother Elizabeth did not survive long and was buried on 4th Feb. 1809 at Laxton. Presumably the child was
brought up by her grandparents.
Daughter Elizabeth BAGLEY married John VALLANCE at Ordsall, Nottinghamshire, on 13th October 1829,
2 years after the birth of her illegitimate daughter Harriet.
In the 1841 census of Ordsall Harriet is recorded as Harriet VALLANCE.
Harriet, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth BAGULEY was born on 1st May 1827 at Stapleford, Lincolnshire.
A Bastardy Case was heard at the Quarter Sessions at Sleaford, Lincs. on the 13th March 1827 naming the father
as Robert ANDREW of Laxton, Notts.
In the 1851 census Harriet was a servant to farmer William Lancaster at Torworth Grange and gave her birthplace as Laxton.
Harriet had an illegitimate son James, Bapt. 4th October 1852 at Ordsall, Notts. The father not known.
Harriet married John BARTHORPE on 25th December 1855 at Ordsall. Harriet’s illegitimate son was later known
as James Bagley VALLANCE.
In the 1861 Census of Ordsall James BAGLEY is listed as the son of John and Harriet BARTHORPE.
