There were previous SMALLWOODs at Allerston Yorkshire, back to a marriage of Matthew SMALLWOOD to Alice SMITH in 1606,
but no relationships have been found.

Richard SMALLWOOD married Alice ALLAN on 12th Nov 1661 at Allerston.
Only their first child Mary b. 1662 is found in the Baptismal Register, but from the Will of Alice
there appear to have been at least 6 children:- Mary 1662,Phillip, Richard, Thomas, Alice DOWSLAND and Margaret JOHNSON.
At the Enclosure of Allerston in 1666 Richard SMALLWOOD was allotted 0 acres 18 roods 1 pole.
Richard was buried 3rd January 1681 at Allerston and in May 1683 his wife Alice took out an Admon. to
administer his estate. No Will or Inventory has been found for Richard.
Alice died and was buried 24th August 1706. Her Will, dated 6th August 1706, leaves only nominal sums
to her beneficiaries as most of her money had been 'disposed of some years ago'. Son Phillip was the Executor.

Philip SMALLWOOD is likely to be the son of Richard and Alice by reason of his children named Richard and Alice.
Phillip married Mercy CRAVEN on the 10th of May 1701 at Ebberston, Yorkshire, which was Mercy's parish, but they
lived in Allerston. Their children were christened in Allerston and Philip and Mercy were buried there. Philip was
a husbandman. In the Allerston Court Rolls Philip SMALLWOOD is paying rent of £9-5-0 per quarter year.
There were no previous SMALLWOODs recorded at Ebberston but there is a long history of Cravens there. In his Will of
1716 Christopher CRAVEN of Ebberston left money to the children of Phillip Smallwood, his grandchildren.
There was a Margaret SMALLWOOD married at Allerston in 1700 to Thomas JOHNSON. This will have been the sister of Phillip and the Margaret JOHNSON
of Alice SMALLWOOD'S Will. Philip and Mercy had a son Richard in 1714, as did Thomas SMALLWOOD in 1701 and
there was a Richard SMALLWOOD buried at Al1erston in 1681 .
These may be ancestral names. There may also be some connection with the SMALLWOODs of Egton?
Philip was buried on the 22nd of April 1721 at Allerston and Mercy was buried on the 22nd of April 1754 at Ebberston.
Mercy obtained an Admon. of Phillip's estate in June 1721. The interesting Inventory, of .household goods and livestock,
values the estate at £75-1-8. The Inventory was appraised by Thomas SMALLWOOD and others.
The children of Philip and Mercy baptised at Allerston were:-
John 1701, Alma 1703, Alice 1703, Margaret 1706, Anna 1707, Richard 1714, Philip 1717.

John SMALLWOOD the son of Phillip and Mercy was baptised on the 5th of February 1701 at Allerston.
On the 2nd of November 1729 John, a yeoman, married Mary RAINE of Snainton in Brompton parish at Holy Trinity Church,
Goodramgate, York, by Licence.
John died in 1761 and left a Will dated 27 July 1760, witnessed by Guy RAINE. There is no Inventory but he leaves £30 to
son John, £20 to dau. Elizabeth, 5/- to dau. Mary HODGSON and the rest to wife Mary and son Philip.
The children of John and Mary baptised at Allerston were: Elizabeth 1730, Philip 1732, Mary 1736 and John 1742.

John SMALLWOOD, the son of John and Mary, was baptised on the 15th of February 1742 at Allerston.
On the 6th of June 1767 John married Mary RICHARDSON (or RICHINSON) of Kirby Moorside at Rillington.
From 1768 to 17 .. John was the Parish Clerk of Birdsall.
A John SMALLWOOD witnessed a marriage at Wharram Percy (or Thixendale) in 1799 and a Philip SMALLWOOD witnessed
one there in 1805. Mary was buried at Birdsall on the 2nd of May 1816 aged 73. John was buried at Birdsall on the
29th of April 1832, aged 90.
The children of John and Mary baptised at Birdsall were: Elizabeth 1768, John 1770, Richard 1771, Mary 1773, Ann 1775,
Hannah I 1776, Rachel 1778, William 1780, Esther 1781, Lydia 1783, Philip 1785, Hannah II 1786 and Thomas 1789.
Son John died in 1806.
Son William married Mary THORNTON in 1806 at Nunburnholme and had 6 children before emigrating to New York State, USA.

Esther SMALLWOOD, the daughter of John and Mary, was baptised on the 17th of February 1781 at Birdsall.
Esther married Robert PIERCY on the 21st of February 1801 at Birdsall and they lived at Rillington.
Esther died in 1855 and is buried at Rillington.
Note: During the 'Commonwealth' of 1653- 1660 there were no Church Baptisms or Marriages recorded. But there
