James STANDEN, b ca. 1670 at Salehurst, married Elizabeth GANE on 14th May 1695 at Bodiham, Sussex.
Their son James was born 1696 at Salehurst and daughter Anne born 1698.
***
James STANDEN married Ann PIPER 1st January 1727 at Lewes and they lived at Maresfield, Sussex.
They had Samuel b. 1728
and James b. 1744 at Maresfield
***
Samuel STANDEN was born in 1728 at
Maresfield, the son of James and Ann.
He married Ann WHEATLEY on 17th May 1752 at
Maresfield.
The
STANDENS of Maresfield seem to have been blacksmiths because an Elias STANDEN
was paying Land Tax Assessment for the forge at Maresfield in 1774.
Samuel and Ann had 10 children at Burwash, Sussex:
Anne,1754; James, 1756; Elias,1758; Susanna,1759; John,1760; Mary,1762;
Thomas,1764; Sarah,1766; Fanny,1769 and Elizabeth,1770.
The Samuel of Burwash is almost certainly
the one from Maresfield because of his wife's name Anne and the children's names
of Anne and James.
Samuel was buried at Burwash on 19 Sept.1803
aged 76 and was recorded as " from the Forge".
***
Samuel STANDEN II, of Burwash, is assumed to be the son of the above
Samuel and Ann.
A record of his birth or baptism has not
been found yet, but it may have been somewhere else when his father was a
journeyman.
He married Frances FULLER on the 19th April
1778 at Burwash and the witnesses were James STANDEN and Elias STANDEN.
Samuel and Frances had 3 children at
Burwash; Elias,1779;
Matthias,1781(died 1782); Frances, 1783 and Rebecca at Salehurst in 1785.
Wife Francis died in April 1790 at
Salehurst and Samuel then married Susannah BARROW on 8th November 1790 at
Ewhurst. Samuel and Susannah had 3 children at Salehurst: Ambrose, 1791;
Matthias II, 1793 and Anne 1798.
***
Elias STANDEN was born at Burwash in Sussex and baptized 24th
February 1779.
He was a farrier and blacksmith.
On 25th October 1801 at Waldron he married
Barbara HEATHFIELD, born 1783 at Waldron in Sussex.
At the time of his marriage Elias was
living at Ripe in Sussex.
Elias and Barbara had 4 sons and 2
daughters: Henry,1802 at Hoathly ,Sussex; Frances, 1801 and Francis, 1812 at
Canterbury, Kent; Eliza, 1813 and Charles, 1815 at Woolwich, Kent and William,
1818 at Waresley, Hunts.
Henry, Francis and Charles became
blacksmiths.
The gap in their children from 1801 to 1812
at Canterbury may have been a consequence of the war with Napoleon's France. In
'Britain against Napoleon' by Carola Oman it is noted that in the 'Courier' of
Sept. 1805 ' advertisement columns called for skilled smiths and wheelwrights
for the Woolwich workshops'. After Canterbury the family moved to Woolwich.
Elias enlisted in the Royal Horse Artillery, based at Woolwich, and
became a Sergeant Farrier. On 26th May 1815 they landed at Ostende
in Belgium and proceeded to Waterloo. In
the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815 Elias was in Major Bull’s
’I’ Troop of howitzers. After the defeat
of Napolean the RHA proceeded to Paris as the Army of Occupation and remained
there until October 1816. Elias was
awarded the Waterloo Medal.
By
1818 Elias had left the army and was established as a blacksmith at Waresley in
Huntingdonshire. His youngest son
William was baptized at Waresley on 29th January 1818.
In the 1851 census of Gamlingay Elias and
his family, including his unmarried daughter Francis were living at Mill Hill
Cottage in Mill Street.
The Gamlingay Highways Rates book records
payments from Elias Standen from 1854 to 1861 for 'house and garden'. Elias'
wife Barbara died in 1862. In 1862 and 1865 the payments were made by Fanny
Standen.
Elias died in 1867 and the death was
registered at Caxton, near Gamlingay, Cambs.
His age was given as 91 but was nearer 87.
***
William STANDEN, the son of Elias and
Barbara, was born on 29th January 1818 at Waresley, Hunts and Baptised on Jan.
30th, as shown on his surviving christening mug.
On 20th February 1848 he married Leonora
Penelope Orange RANDOLPH, from Bath, Somerset, at St Mary's Marylebone, London
and was a warehouse manager.
Children: Maria Jane, 1849; Harry Henry born 17 Nov.1850 at Little
Albany St, St.Pancras, London; William Ebenezer,1854; twins Barbara and Charles
born 2nd June 1857 at 16 Clipstone St., Marylebone then Eliza Kate, 1860.
In 1857 William was a lamp salesman.
In
1861 they were living at 42 Bolsover Street, Marylebone, and William was a
lustre mounter, (chandelier builder) .
In
1869 William was a salesman living at Portland Road, Regent’s Park, when
daughter Maria Jane married Frank H Blackbee.
In 1871 he was lodging, without his family,
with John Ashbury, a shopkeeper at Norton on the Welbeck Estate in
Nottinghamshire, and gave his occupation as lustre mounter. He may well have
been occupied on the extensive building operations going on at Welbeck Abbey at
that time, which would have required the glass chandeliers which he made. His
fellow lodger was a plasterer from Dorset.
In 1871 Leonora and the children had moved
to 51 Bolsover Street, which was also occupied by the Blackbee family of Frank
H., Maria J.(nee Standen) and baby Blanche.
In 1875, when his son Harry Henry was
married at Whitwell, Derbyshire, William gave his occupation as salesman.
By 1881 William was 'beyond work' and with
Penelope was living at 119 Harley Street, Marylebone, with daughters Barbara
and Eliza, who were both dressmakers.
They
had left Harley Street by 1891 and were living at Creswell, Derbyshire, near to
Whitwell where son Harry Henry was living. Daughter Eliza Kate had died at
Creswell in December 1890 and was buried at Whitwell.
Son
Charles became a Professor of Music and in 1881 was living at West Greenock,
Renfrewshire with his wife Margaret and brother-in-law Thomas Lamb. In 1915 Charles was presented with a Music
Cabinet by the Church Choir of Lenzie Parish Church, near Kirkintilloch,
Scotland.
Son William Ebenezer was a medical student but died in 1880 at Cowpen,
Blyth, Northumberland.
Daughter Maria Jane married in 1869 at Marylebone to Frank H. BLACKBEE,
a Musical Instrument Maker and Professor of Music. In 1871 Maria’s son Stanley BLACKBEE, a piano
tuner, wife Selina, and son Stanley Haydn BLACKBEE were staying at Retford with
Harry Henry STANDEN
William died on 16 Nov 1905 at Cowpen,
Blyth, Northumberland, aged 87. His wife Leonora died there in 1911 aged 90.
Why did they retire to Northumberland after William Ebenezer had died there?
***
Harry Henry STANDEN, the son of William
and Leonora Penelope Orange was born on 17th November 1850 at Little Albany
Street, St. Pancras, London.
He married Anne PASHLEY the daughter of
George PASHLEY, blacksmith, at Whitwell, Derbyshire on 24th September
1875. At that time Harry Henry was living at Welbeck.
Harry Henry and Anne had five children:
George William,1876; Harry Pashley, 1878; Charles
Randolph,1880; John Arthur,1883; and Florence Emma,1886.
Charles Randolph was born at Sheffield,
Brightside and all the others at Whitwell.
George William was probably sickly at birth
because he was baptised privately on the following day July 26th 1876 and died
two years later.
Harry Henry was a painter and decorator at
Whitwell and later moved to Retford in Nottinghamshire and lived in Carolgate
and at 16 Churchgate.
***
Harry Pashley STANDEN, the son of Harry
Henry and Anne, was born at Whitwell in Derbyshire on 21st July 1878. His
family moved to Retford and he attended the Grammar School there.
He married Agnes DERBYSHIRE in 1908. Agnes had moved to Retford with her mother
and family from Shirley in Derbyshire when her father died in 1881.
Harry Pashley (known as Pash Standen) and
Agnes had two children; Harry Charles Arthur,1908 and Florence Eileen, 1912.
He continued in his father's painting and
decorating business; but in 1915 he became a callender machinist at the
Northern Rubber Co., until he retired in 1953 aged 74.
They lived at 41 Nelson Street, Retford.
He was a church organist, playing at
Retford St. Swithins and in his later years at Clayworth parish church to which
he cycled twice on Sundays and to choir practice.
He died in 1967 aged 88.
***
Florence Eileen STANDEN was born on
22nd May 1912 at Retford.
In
her 'teens she went to live at Chapel en le Frith with her cousin Jessie SYDEE,
who's mother had recently died.
Eileen was a shop assistant at Wrights the
grocers in Retford before she married James Wilfred JENNINGS on 21st February
1933 at Retford, St. Saviours.
