VALLANCE
. Robert VALLANCE married Mary HOLMES on 5th April 1763 at Norton Cuckney, Notts.
Robert and Mary were both of Woodhouse Hall.
They had a daughter Hannah who died 15th Nov 1770, a son William chr on 9th May 1773,
a son Robert christened on 4th June 1775 and Sarah chr. 1 Jan 1777, all christened at Whitwell, Derbyshire.

. William VALLANCE, the son of Robert and Mary was christened on 9th May 1773 at Whitwell.
He married Frances CADE on 5th May 1794 at Ordsall, Notts.
In 1841 William was a Papermaker at Ordsall.
William and Frances had:- John 1794, Sarah 1795, Ann 1797, William 1799, John 1801,
Charles 1803, Thomas 1805, George 1806, Elizabeth 1808 and Robert 1810, all born at Ordsall.
In the 1841 census Charles was at Whitwell. In the 1851 census son Robert was a shoemaker at Ordsall.
William died in Feb 1850 at Thrumpton, aged 77, and Frances died in June 1850 at Ordsall, aged 88.
They were buried at Ordsall.

. John VALLANCE, the son of William and Frances was christened on 28th July 1801 at Ordsall.
John married Elizabeth BAGGELEY, of Laxton, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth BAGGALEY, on 13th Oct. 1829
at Ordsall. John was an Agricultural Labourer.
John's wife Elizabeth already had an illegitimate daughter Harriet, b.1827 at Stapleford, Lincs.
John and Elizabeth had:- Ann born about 1830, William 1832, Robert 1834, Fanny 1837, Easter 1843,
George 1847, Henry 1849 and Eliza 1853. William to Eliza were born at Ordsall.
In 1851 William was a farm labourer at Lound Farm, Kneesall.
In 1881 John was an Annuitant and living in Ordsall Street, Ordsall.

. Harriet VALLANCE was the illegitimate daughter of John VALLANCE's wife Elizabeth BAGGELEY.
Harriet was born on 1st may 1827 at Stapleford, Lincolnshire. The father was Robert ANDREW of Laxton
(b. 1803 at Spridlington, Lincs.). A Bastardy Order was made against Robert ANDREW at Sleaford Magistrates
Court for costs and maintenace of the child. Harriet was Baptized 27th may 1827 at Stapleford, Lincs.as
Harriet BAGALER.
In the 1841 census of Ordsall Harriet is recorded as the daughter of John and Elizabeth VALLANCE.
On 4th Oct 1852 Harriet had a son James VALLANCE, christened at Ordsall on 23 Jan 1853, but no
father's name is recorded.
Harriet (as Harriet BAGLOR) married John BARTHORPE on 25 Dec 1855 at Ordsall and they had:- George 1857,
Mary - Ann 1859 and Elizabeth .

. James VALLANCE, the son of Harriet VALLANCE was born on 4th Oct 1852 and christened on 23rd
Jan 1853 at Ordsall.
James used the name James Bagley VALLANCE and was a labourer when he married Mary GABBITAS on 23rd DEC 1878 at Elkesley.
James and Mary had Eliza, born on 21st Nov 1878 at Elkesley and then christened on 21 Mar 1879 at Whitwell,
after their marriage. Then followed: Harriet Baggalay 1880, Alice 1886, Charles 1888 and Mary 1892.
After Eliza the other children were all born whilst James was an agricultural labourer living in part of
Steetley Farm near Whitwell, as shown in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. There is a family connection with
Whitwell as James' great grandfather William was born there and William's son Charles (b. 1803) still lived
there until he died in 1853.
Soon after Mary was born they moved to Hawksley Farm at Askham near Retford, as seen in trade directories
of 1895 and 1900, where James was a Farmer.
There is a photograph of the wedding of Harriet Baggalay VALLANCE to Fred DAY in 1902 which shows many relatives.
Until 1921 James had the tenancy of Wigthorpe Farm at Carlton. It then passed to George HALL the husband of
his daughter Mary.
James died 23rd May 1932, aged 79, and is buried at North Carlton with his wife Mary who died 2nd January 1942
aged 84.

. Alice VALLANCE the daughter of James and Mary was born on the 28th Feb 1886 at Steetley Farm
near Whitwell.
Alice married William JENNINGS in 1907 at Retford.
During the first World War, whilst here husband was in the army, Alice and their son stayed at Wigthorpe Farm.
Alice died on 22 June 1932 at Retford aged 46.
